We prefer for you to sign up for class online, so that we know who to expect in attendance for class. We’ve made registering and paying for class online easier than ever in 2026. Just download the WellnessLiving Achieve app and find the Harrisonburg Dance Cooperative there to sign up and pay in just a few easy taps! However, you can sign up without paying. Yes! Many of our classes are beginner-friendly. Another great option for those who are completely new to dance (and dancers of any level!) is to request a private lesson.
-
Many of our teachers offer private classes for a variety of styles and levels.
Learn more about private dance lessons at HDC here.

HDC is primarily a space for adults to explore movement and expression. Our classes are designed for people over the age of 18, and each teacher is given discretion regarding whether children and teens can be admitted to their classes in addition to adult students. Students younger than 18 must have parental consent to participate in any HDC class or event, and should understand that they will be learning alongside adult students.
Please see individual class pages for details.
Your First Class
-
Wear whatever you can move freely and feel good in! No matter which dance technique you are taking a class in, we suggest that you wear clothes that don’t limit your range of motion and don’t overheat your body. Wearing layers that can be removed as you warm up is also recommended.
No outdoor or street shoes are permitted in the studio to prevent damage to our professional sprung Marley flooring. Please leave all street shoes in the cubbies to your left when you enter the welcome room. Bare feet, regular socks, dance socks, grippy socks, and ballet shoes or other soft-soled dance shoes (such as flat jazz shoes) work for most classes. Some classes may permit clean, indoor-only sneakers.
Please be mindful not to wear recently-applied lotion on bare feet on the Marley flooring. No sprays of any kind may be used inside the studio (eg. hairspray, body spray, dry shampoo).
For ballet classes:
Traditional ballet attire is welcome, but not required. Wearing form-fitting clothing is suggested, because it allows you and your teacher to assess and adjust your alignment. For footwear, dance socks or ballet slippers are preferred, but regular socks are fine too!
For modern and contemporary classes:
Since these classes often involve floorwork, we recommend clothes that cover your arms and legs. Bare feet, dance socks, or regular socks are all good options for footwear.

The understanding that you will need to leave your street/outdoor shoes in the cubbies conveniently located next to our main entry door in the welcome room – please plan to dance in socks or bare feet, unless the class you’re attending states otherwise in its specific sign-up directions!
The willingness and excitement to have fun and try something new in a supportive environment!

The main door currently in use as HDC’s front door opens into our welcome room, where street shoes and coats can be neatly stored while you’re in class. This door has one small step up in the entryway from the sidewalk. Visitors who need barrier-free access can ask HDC’s teachers or staff members to open the adjacent door, which enters directly into the dance studio space and features a flat, no-step entryway from the sidewalk.
The welcome room contains a minifridge. HDC teachers and staff are glad to help you store any medications, breastmilk, or other items that need to be refrigerated while you’re in class or participating in an event.
There are two single occupancy, gender neutral restrooms in the space. Both are equipped with small stepstools to assist young children who may be visiting the studio. Both are equipped with free pads and tampons, available to any member of our community.
One restroom is large enough to change clothes comfortably inside. This larger restroom is also ADA-accessible.
HDC teachers and staff are glad to help accommodate you in the way that supports your body best. Please ask us about any accommodations you may need.

HDC enjoys sharing clips of our students and teachers dancing on social media, and we would love for you to share, too. Consent from all people present in the studio is essential before recording. Please do not record without asking for verbal consent from the instructor and all class participants. Please honor the wishes of dancers who do not want to be recorded by ensuring that they are not in frame. If there happen to be any dancers younger than 18 present in the studio, do not record them.
If you have any photos or video clips of HDC classes or other HDC events that you would be open to having shared on our social media channels, please send them to heidi@hburgdancecoop.org.
-
Class cancellations due to inclement weather, teacher substitutions and other important class updates are communicated primarily through email, and, new for 2026, through text and push notifications from our scheduling platform, WellnessLiving.
-
As adult dancers, we know life gets hectic sometimes! In most cases, arriving up to 5 minutes late is permissible, though that means you’re missing essential warmup time at the start of class, which can compromise safety. It is up to each teacher’s discretion to admit late students, regardless of the time the student arrives.
-
It’s important to listen to your body and honor your medical professionals’ advice about your injury or mobility limitations. HDC teachers are not medical professionals and cannot diagnose or treat injuries. However, we’re glad to have you in class and to help you modify movements as needed. Many of our beginner-friendly classes are good options for dancers who need to modify movements to accommodate a healing injury or limited mobility. Please make sure to inform your teacher before class if you are healing from an injury or have a mobility limitation, so that they can help you modify class to best support you and your dance journey. Everybody and every body are welcome!
-
Please bring water to every class!
No food is allowed on the Marley floor inside the dance studio. Snacks may be eaten in other parts of the studio. Please clean up after yourself and throw away any trash.
